On Site Sewage System Maintenance & Care

Your on-site sewage system will require your care and attention. A well-maintained septic system can run for decades.

  • Have your tank inspected and pumped every 2-3 years.
  • Have the tank pumped by a septic tank cleaner who has a valid certificate of qualification.

The disposal field must also be properly cared for.

  • The sod cover should be maintained to prevent erosion and reduce the amount of rainfall that enters the field.
  • The soil needs to breathe so it is important not to cover the field with a hard surface, such as concrete or asphalt.

Vehicles must not be allowed to run over any part of the disposal field as soil compaction, crushed pipes, and damage to the field can result. For a trouble-free operation, you should also control how much water you use and what goes down the drain.  Chemicals and harsh detergents will impede the operation of the septic tank or possibly even seep into ground water potentially poisoning our drinking supply.

Here are some examples of products you should NOT flush:

  • Facial tissue
  • Paper towels
  • Cigarette butts
  • Sanitary napkins
  • Newspaper
  • Disposable diapers
  • Metal/metal items
  • Paint
  • Solvents
  • Thinners
